A RICH HISTORY

Kooyonga Golf Club's origins date back to 1922 when Mr. HC (Cargie) Rymill, diverted by a train strike, saw a 'For Sale' sign on May’s Paddock, a tract of swamp and sand dunes. Recognizing the site's potential, he envisioned it as an ideal location for a golf course. By the end of that year, nine holes were playable, with three more added soon after. The course was officially opened on June 28, 1924. Kooyonga has hosted five Australian Opens and the 2018 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open.

Course Layout and Design

Kooyonga Golf Club features an 18-hole par-72 championship course that spans over 6,337 meters. Originally designed by W.H. Rymill, it has a feel of the traditional style courses of the 1920’s by Alison, Colt, or MacKenzie.
Neil Crafter's redesign of Kooyonga Golf Club, involved refining fairway layouts, updating bunkering, and improving green complexes to align with modern standards, while preserving the course’s traditional character. Key changes included widening fairways, recontouring greens, and adding strategic bunkers. The result is a revitalized layout that maintains its historical charm and enhances the overall golfing experience.

Signature Holes

Several holes stand out at Kooyonga Golf Club for their design and challenge.

The 5th hole at Kooyonga is a compelling risk-reward challenge. Players can go for the green, but if playing it safe, you’re left with a tricky pitch from about 100 meters to a two-tiered green, with a swale running from left to right. The green is guarded by three bunkers on the left and grassy hollows on the right and rear.
The 14th hole, the most iconic par 3 at Kooyonga, seems simple from the tee. However, the prevailing breeze is shielded at this point, making club selection difficult as the ball rises above the tree line. The green is well-protected by deep bunkers and a grassy hollow at the rear.

Ranked in Australia’s Top 20

Kooyonga Golf Club is renowned for its immaculate course conditions year-round. The greens are fast and true, offering a reliable putting surface that rewards well-executed shots. It is the quintessential traditional course set on a sandy, undulating site in Adelaide’s sand belt. Since its opening, Cargie Rymill’s original routing has seen minimal changes, with recent enhancements by architects Crafter + Mogford improving the course’s beauty and playability. Frequently ranked among Australia’s top golf courses—currently 18th by Australian Golf Digest—Kooyonga is renowned for its excellent conditioning and year-round playability.
